Canada’s economic conditions have changed dramatically over the years. One of the most exciting aspect of this trend is the way in which women entrepreneurs have moved with confidence into the new economy.
BC has almost 360, 000 small businesses, and women own or operate about 35 per cent of them – the highest rate of small businesss ownership among women in Canada.

One of the reasons why more Canadian women are in business is because of the hostile corporate environment. Corporate Canada is still very much an “Old boy’s network” where women constantly hit the glass ceiling. Canadian women have to create opportunities for themselves through self-employment or entrepreneurship. Many third-world countries are far more advanced in women’s workplace equality.
Statistics Canada survey results demonstrate that men still enjoy a wage advantage over women: women’s average hourly wage rate is about 84% – 89% of the men’s average. Unlike other studies, controls for work experience and job-related responsibilities are used. Gender differences in full-year, full-time work experience explain at most, 12% of the gender wage gap.
